My stepdaughter would like to see me in hip-hop shoes. I could imagine myself in sneakers, but more likely I would seek a fashion compromise that suits us both. This attitude has nothing to do with urbanity, however.

I am not an advocate of my very own opinion. I am an advocate of the cause. I tell people how one could achieve and do things without letting them know how I personally would tackle the problem. Is this an urban trait? I believe no.

No matter in what language I speak, I run the risk that people do not understand me. But my goal is to inspire my interlocutors, not to guide them. In that sense I am more the fantasy tale author than the cookery book writer. That creates my urbanity.

私は自分の意見を主張するタイプじゃないんだ。むしろ、大義を主張するほうかな。自分だったらどうやって問題に対処するのかという話をするのではなく、人とはいかに何かを成し遂げたり何かを実行するのか、という話をするね。でも、これが「urban」の特性かといえば、そうじゃないだろう。

私がどんな言語で話をしようとも、ほかの人が私の言うことを理解しないのではないかというリスクを冒している。でも、私が目指しているのは、対話の相手をインスパイアさせることであり、導くことではないのだ。そういった意味で私は、料理本の著者というよりはむしろおとぎ話の作家といえるだろう。これが私の「urbanity」を創るのだよ。
