"Urban Research"という言葉は、文字通り「都市や街に関する調査や探求」ということです。ただ、そのまま解釈するとそれは恐ろしいほど単刀直入なものになるので、私たちはそれとは違うアプローチ　ー「urbanとは何か」を探る旅に出かけることにしたのです。出来上がってしまっている言葉の定義を一旦放棄して、「urbanity」を備えている実際の人たちの実話に耳を傾けるという、実に内面的なものでした。「urban」や「urbanity」を考察するということは、例えば「urban」という言葉のルーツはラテン語で都市を意味する『urbs』だというように、都市部で行われるフィールド・スタディを期待するかもしれませんが、これもまた危険なまでに単刀直入すぎるのです。

たとえば代わりに、山の頂上で海洋学を学ぶとしましょう。確かに、こういったアプローチには、避けがたい困難が待ち受けています。過去に確立された調査結果や実績の多くを、あっという間に失うことになるかもしれないのです。選ばれたこの山頂という場所は、何よりも調査対象から一番離れています。しかしながら、調査対象へのこの距離感こそが、いろんな角度から観察することを可能にし、それが新しい見識をもたらすのです。「山における海洋学」としてしまうと、海中にいる生物を見つけるかのごとく、海洋生物の恵みの証であり知識の裏付けでもある、岩に隠された海洋生物の化石を見つけたくなるのです。

同様に、田舎にくらす人々の方が、「urbanity」を最適に表現しているのかもしれません。田舎の方が、都市部よりも都会的なライフスタイルを如実に反映しているかもしれません。ということで、数ページのあいだ、既存の定義からすこし距離を置いてみましょう。登場人物たちは、彼や彼女にとって「urbanとは何を意味するのか」ということを語っています。どのストーリーもそれぞれユニーク、且つリアルで説得力があります。間違っているものは何一つありません。かといって真実のみがあるのかと言えばそうでもありません。さらに、私たちは「urban」の普遍の真理を求めている訳でもありません。今日、数えきれないほど多様で、矛盾があって、想像力をかき立てるような、そして驚くような「urban」の解釈がある、ということこそが、この言葉の使い方を余すところなく表しているのです。

結局のところ、皮肉めいた捉え方が言葉にいろいろな解釈を与えていくのです。現代における「urban」は、いまや未だかつて解釈され得なかったような「大いなる都市伝説」そのものになっているのかもしれないのです。

Urban Research literally refers to examinations or inquiries in or of cities and towns. That is so scarily straightforward that we had to take a different approach. Let us take a tour into the research of urban instead, a highly introspective walk that celebrates the dismissal of established definitions and applauds the true stories and real people that furnish urbanity. In order to do research on urban and urbanity one expects the field studies to take place in cities, as the linguistic roots of urban come from the Latin «urbs» – meaning city. This is again dangerously straightforward.

So, let us do oceanology on a mountain peak instead. Admittedly, these sorts of approaches bear some inherent difficulties. You instantly lose most of the previously established findings and results. Nothing is further removed from the research object than the chosen field. But it is this distance to the research object that allows you to sneak up on it from every angle and to be rewarded with new insights. In terms of oceanology on the mountain, we want to find those marine fossils covered and hidden in rock that define and influence the knowledge and appreciation of the ocean life as much as anything we find in the wide seas.

Similarly, rural people might portray urbanity at its best. The countryside may reflect urban lifestyle clearer than any metropolis. So let us distance ourselves from the established definitions for a few pages. Almost everybody will give you an explanation of what urban means to him or her. Every story is different. Most stories sound convincing. None is wrong. None is true. And we are not on a quest for the universal truth of urban either. Today‘s million varying, contradicting, inspiring and surprising interpretations of urban demonstrate the use of the word perfectly.

In the end irony strikes the word, because what urban became recently might just be the biggest urban myth that has ever been created.
